It's International Stout Day

Today is International Stout Day, a day to pop open, enjoy and discuss the virtues of stout beer, especially as the snow rolls in across Montana. Like National IPA Day, it seems we beer enthusiasts like to put days on the calendar as if we need a good reason to enjoy great beer. What is nice about days like today is that it's an excuse to open a beer that may not be a style you particularly enjoy or drink regularly and since you're drinking it for a larger, "greater cause" (i.e. celebrating a "holiday"), you might be more apt to approach it with an open mind. For that, days like today are great!

According to the BJCP, the "stout" category is made up of six distinct sub-categories:

  • Dry Stout
  • Sweet Stout
  • Oatmeal Stout
  • Foreign Extra Stout
  • American Stout
  • Russian Imperial Stout

Which of these do you prefer? Montana brewers offer many fine stouts in most all of these sub-categories. Feel free to comment below which ones you recommend.

If you're the social type, you can earn the "Stout Day" badge on Untappd today by checking in to any stout. Last year, Untappd had over 18k check-ins on Stout Day with 1,126 unique stouts being represented. Pretty impressive.
