Flathead Lake Brewing Co., based in Bigfork, Montana, will be tapping a keg of its newest creation, Montucky Sour Cherry Brown, on Monday August 6 at 7 PM at its Missoula brewpub. Head brewer, Tim Jacoby, will be on hand to tap the first keg. This very limited beer will only be tapped on Mondays ("Montucky Mondays") until it's gone.
If you were privy to FLBC's first attempt at a sour beer, you may really enjoy this one. This "sour brown" starts with a brown ale grain bill and Golding hops, to which a blend of Brettanomyces, Saccharomyces, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus yeast strains are added. It was aged in oak cherry port wine barrels, along with Certified Organic cherries from The Orchard at Flathead Lake. After a period of "wait and wait and wait" it was naturally carbed with Champagne yeast.
This beer won the Bronze Medal at the 2012 North American Beer Awards in Idaho for Flanders-Style Red or Brown Ale.
The final product clocks in at 6.8% and 20 IBUs. Sorry, but no growler fills on this limited beer.
